Naked Man Moleskin
YHC recently heard an interview with Sam Walker, the author of the Captain Class, a book chronicling the 17 best sports teams of all time, and their captains/leaders. The leader is not always who you think. Michael Jordan was a terrible leader. The Yankees only won one World Series with Jeter as the captain. The strongest, fastest, best looking is usually not a great leader. Those are usually focused on themselves and their game. Leaders are focused on LEADING OTHERS. The leader of the Bulls during the Jordan era was Bill Cartwright, an old lanky center that no one remembers. The leader of the 1990-2000 Cuban women’s volleyball team (deemed the greatest team ever by Sam Walker) was an undersized player with heart and determination.
The leader does the right thing at the right time for the right person. That can be anyone at anytime. If you’re not the boss, the owner, the decision maker, the strongest, the fastest, the best looking, you can still be a leader. There were many leaders finishing at different times this morning. Monkey Samurai, the smallest of the PAX, after finishing his own BD, ran extra laps with the six to encourage him along the way. That’s a leader.
